700R4 to 4l60

Did a search, but everyone seems to dodge the 93 4l60. Aparently this year it was electronically contolled?

Long story short, i have a 1987 firebird with a 1970 350. Its carbureted, has cruise control, but at the moment not connected. My 700R4 is on its last legs, so its time for a change. The 93 Astro EXT on my driveway with identical km's is going to the wreckers so im salvaging the drivetrain because its in excellent shape.

Its electronic speedo, so no worries there. However, my 700R4 has a TV cable, but the 4l60 has a connector, which i liberally cut off thinking it was just the lock-up switch. I later realized it doesnt have a TV cable. Just from what ive read, it seems the 93 is a bit of an oddball tranny. Can i make it work? Anyways, i have 2 questions.

1) How do i hook up this 4l60 to my carbed motor and make it work? I hope i dont need a TPS or something, if i do, i can just take it off the motor. But i need to know ASAP before the van goes to junk.

2) My electronic speed sensor. Both trans have it, but do they vary from vehicle to vehicle? Ie, will my 4l60 read correct speed in the firebird, without any swaps?

the 4l60 is just a 700r4 with a different name, im not exactly sure but there may be minor differances but i recall the 93 lt1 had a TB cable on the throttle body. I may be incorrect but u may have ur hands on a 4l60E

Re: 700R4 to 4l60

My 4L60 that I use to have in my 91' Z28 was the same as my 700R4 that was in my 86'.

Both had TV cables and both had connectors that plugged into the trans.

700R4 & 4L60 are the same transmission. The dimensions are the same also. GM just changed the name in either 91' to 4L60.

In your case I believe you may have the 4L60E, which GM introduced in 93' it is the electronic version of the 700R4 & 4L60.

It is possible to mate the trans to your motor. However, I highly doubt you will have any drivability because it is computer controlled and it relies on many sensors to make it shift and perform correctly.

Check out these sites ...
http://www.antiquechevytrucks.com/Co...nformation.htm

http://www.phoenixtrans.com/html/gmtrans.html

It seems that phoenixtrans.com can retrofit a 4L60E to a non-computerized application. Therefore, you could probably get it to work but you would probably be better off just getting another 700R4.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Re: 700R4 to 4l60

Alright guys, some more information i forgot to include.

If i go with the Trans-go shift kit, and make it fully manual shifting, and get a manual switch for lock-up, does it still matter that its electronic????

I mean, id be telling the transmission what to do, when to do it, it wouldnt need any input from the throttle. Basically id just connect the lock-up controls, and leave the rest be.

Any ideas?

Re: 700R4 to 4l60

use the stuff from the 4l60e to rebuild your 700r4. you would still have to reuse your original pump, case and valve body. since you are getting it from an astro you prolly have to change the input shaft. i dont believe using just the shift kit will allow you to use the 4l60e in your application as i think that it gets throttle input for throttle pressure inside the tranny.

Re: 700R4 to 4l60

Crap, so its a loose loose situation for me i guess. Well im not rebuilding it, i dont have the knowledge, the experience, and most of all the TIME!!!. I guess i can put the tranny up for sale, and use the money to buy a 700R4. Or maybe i can work out a trade with someone.

Does someone have a definitive answer to what happens with a 4L60E with a full manual shift kit?

Re: 700R4 to 4l60

Not every platform went to the 4L60E in 93, I have a 4L60 out of a 93 9C1 Caprice.

Re: 700R4 to 4l60

I think youre right, but if my tranny has a plug in place of the TV cable, i guess i have to assume its the 4l60E.
