slave cylinder question

can someone here educated my on the slave cylinder? i don't have the engine or trans in the car and im bleeding it to get things ready, and was wondering how it works, is the piston supposed to be all the way in or is it held in by the pressure on the clutch fork, then pushed out buy the master cylinder to release the clutch? as it stands, the piston is in the out position and you can push it back in, but it just returns. i have never dealt with the slave before and just need to know if everything is cool or if i have a problem. its an aluminum slave
