One last question before my gear install (got pictures)

Ok, I do not know rear ends at all. I have no idea what "bearing caps" even are. I was asked by the shop twice if I "had all the parts needed" because I told him the gear set is from another car.

Before I was told:

if the 3.27 requires a different carrier, then yes, all you need is the gears and the new carrier, unless you get a new set of gears, then you can get a gear set already set up for whatever carrier you already have. new bearing are also a good idea. you can use your old yoke, the splines are the same for all 7.5 10 bolts.

you also need the appropriate speedo correction gears.

Now here is a picture of what I have, do I need anything at all circled in red? Or do I JUST need the ringgear/carrier and pinion, and everything else is used from my old rear? Also, should they add the GM posi additive?

Thanks guys

If all those pieces circled in red are from the doner car, you really dont need them. Unless you plan on re-using the bearings on the carrier. Then I would use the races. As for the shims, keep them just in case. You wont need the caps from the doner rear end. If you plan on buying new carrier bearings toss the races from the old bearings.

Man, am I such a horrible newb with rear ends. Where are the bearings on the carrier? Can you buy new ones (where?), or is it ok to use the ones on there? And are the caps the "U" shaped pieces with the bolts in them? What are the shims? What purpose do they serve? And what are the races?

Man that's too many questions. I'm sure he will know what he is doing, I just want to educate myself.

The bearings are on the ends of the carrier. The carrier spins on these when bolted in to the differential. Yes you can and should buy new bearings. The races are what the bearings ride in in the diff. Shims center the carrier in the diff and are also used to set backlash(dont ask). Yes the caps are U shaped with the bolt holes through them. They will cover the races when installed and hold them and the bearings in place. If you are having some one set this up for you at a shop. Just tell them to install new bearings and be done with the old stuff.

Tom, you are really helping me out here. I appreciate it. Are these the carrier bearings I need?

Uh, dont know. Your signature says 9 bolt. But the thread says 10 bolt. The bearings you listed are for a 9 bolt. But you should be able to get them at the local parts store.
