need advice in removing a transmission

Hey Folks trying to remove (slide backwards possibly?) automatic transmission on a V6, 1992 Firebird so can change the flywheel....

the repair manual says disconnect transmission dip stick tube upper rataining bolt.... there is no bolt.... it just comes out of the transmission and sticks up into the engine, can not figure how to disconnect it from the transmission... do i have to pull of the transmission fluid pan and disconnect the tube from underneath or do i just twist it out from the top of the transmission?

There should be a tap on the tube bolted to the engine or cylinder head. If not then just grab the tube and pull it out of the trans. You might have to spray a little pb blaster on it to get it to move. When the tube is broken loose put a drain under the trans, because fluid will probably come out of the hole. You do not need to remove the pan to remove the tube. You might be able to leave the trans cooler lines hooked up and slide the trans back a little. I would always jamb a screwdriver in the flywheel to prevent it from rotating and use a box end wrench and remove the flywheel. Remember to face the new flywheel the correct direction when installing. Hope that helps. Where in Indiana do you live?

You don't have a flywheel. So please don't replace it.

All you have, is a flex plate. I'm going to assume that that's what you're REALLY going to change out.

The way to do it is to put 2 bolts that are about 6" long in the 2 lowest bolt holes, remove all the parts that you would for a trans swap (torque arm bracket, converter bolts, driveshaft, crossmember, fill tube, speedo cable, cooler lines, maybe one or 2 more things) and slide the trans back as far as you can on a floor jack; then use a long wrench with an offset to get at the flex plate bolts. That way you don't have to drain it or go through all the rest of the hassle of pulling it.
