Cheap T56 Crossmember...

I just made my own crossmember for my t56 swap. All i did was cut the center section out of my stock crossmember and weld in 2 7'' pieces of angle iron to move the center exactally 3 1/2'' to the rear. Its strong as hell and fits perfectly. Im sure the piece that sphoon sells is very well made but this is a much cheaper way to go about it. You can cut the stock one with a hacksaw and have a muffler shop weld it up for you for a lot less than the $120 it would cost for a new one. I just thought i would share this with yall because its honestly like a 10min job and as long as you measure it properly you really cant go wrong.

hope this helps someone.....

Re: Cheap T56 Crossmember...

Right....

So now you have all the weight and force on the rear end of the transmission, including perhaps the stock torque arm still, trying to twist the crossmember, even harder than it would already tend to get twisted?

Might look cool and weigh alot and seem like a good idea at the time; but if you step back and look at it, what you just did to the main lateral piece piece of the crossmember is the EXACT SAME THING as you do to your socket by slipping a 18" piece of pipe over the end of your ratchet handle.

Re: Cheap T56 Crossmember...

no unfortunately i dont have a picture or i would share it with yall. and i dont think its going to come apart anytime soon, the welds have good penetration and it has a solid bead all the way around the edges. i havent driven it yet so i dont know if it will hold but ill keep you guys posted.

and its not like its getting all that more leverage just being 3'' away from what it was originally. whats a standard 3/8'' ratchet handle like 8'' long maybe? putting an 18'' cheater bar on that makes the overall legnth 3x longer than it was thereby tripling the ammount of force exerted. this is nowhere near that much of a difference. i feel confident with this piece or i would not have put it on my car. im not trying to call you out sofakingdom, you do have a good point here. i just dont think it will be enough of a difference to break it.
