S10 Torque Converter
What's up fellas?
I'm looking for a new converter and I've heard people talking about using S10 converters as stalls on their GenIIIs. What I can't find is what year model S10 converter works with the best on the 700R4s. I'm hoping that someone here can answer that question for me.
Thanks.

Re: S10 Torque Converter
Although I do not have the part number, I do remember seeing it come up from time to time. Try the advaced search feature. It should bring up quite a bit of good info.

Re: S10 Torque Converter
Appreciate the assistance.
The search worked great although figuring out the stall speed is a little confusing. It appears that the 1995 and newer S10s with the 2.2L L4 are going to be better than the 4.3L V6 ones although looking at Advance and Auto Zone they have the same part number GM32. I'm just hoping that this is going to be enough of a stall behind a TPI 383.

Re: S10 Torque Converter
the s10 converter will be better than your stock converter, however, there is still room for improvement. I am actually going to buy a 25-2800 stall for my 383 from raptor.... only 250 bucks....ive seen s10 converters go for about 150...

Re: S10 Torque Converter
Appreciate the help fellas, but I need to know what it's going to stall at behind a V8 so I can let the tuner know for the chip. Thanks again for the help.

I would have thought it would have been more than that going from behind a L4 to behind a V8.

Re: S10 Torque Converter
The S10 converter is supposed to be the same as the Corvetter converter, which stalls around 2000 rpms. The f-body converter stalls around 1600 rpms.
Its a cheaper alternative to an aftermarket converter, but if you're going to the trouble of removing the tranny to install it, why not put something better in there? A healthy TPI engine would like a 2400 or 2800.

Re: S10 Torque Converter
I'm already over budget on this so I'm trying to come up with some simple solutions until I can afford to replace the tranny.

Re: S10 Torque Converter
There are basically two "high stall" s-10 converters. The one you are after comes behind the 4.3 and was also stock in the vetts in the 80's. The converter behind the 4-cyl has a different input spline count and will not work with your V-8 tranny although it would stall at close to 3000 rpm if it did.
I've see as low as 1800 with a weak LO3 that had no brakes to almost 2400 behind a health vortec 350 that had good brakes. It's a great step up but keep in mind that if the tranny may be going south your converter will be trash when it does let go. So it might be best to save the money for a new tranny and not "waste" it on a stock tranny that you know won't take the power of the 383.

Re: S10 Torque Converter
1998 S10 2wd 4.3L would be a 2200 stall or so
Re: S10 Torque Converter
the stall speed will vary depending upon the combination of the engine it's behind. That's why manufacturer's give you a range. That range is for engine variables and is usually based on a ci range. A converter that's rated at 2400 behind a 383 may stall to over 3 behind a decent big block.
as BMmonteSS said, save the money and do it right
