"Clunk" from clutch?

I'm not sure if i've asked this before, so here goes:

Mechanical clutch linkage on a T10, NOT A T5.

When i'm letting out the clutch to take off, about half of the time the clutch pedal will "hang up", or so it feels. As I let my foot off further, it'll "jump" and kick my foot back, so I lurch ahead like a 14yr old learning to drive.
Also, if I let the clutch out only halfway, to just to roll the car forward a car length, then push the clutch back in, I get a violent clunk and the whole car shakes. It feels like it's coming from the back of the tranny.

-New poly tranny mount (this happened before)
-Stock torque arm, mounting has been checked, and is good.
....?
Think the pressure plate is pooched perhaps? Like if I had bent the tangs on it ? Or...?

Re: "Clunk" from clutch?

That's what I was figuring at first, but I can't think of how? Or on what? My adjusting rod just barely hit the header, but I think I ground it shorter and now it doesn't.

Grease the pivot ***** at both ends of the Z-bar.

In fact, the Z-bar came from the factory, with a little hole in it, near the block end; which just HAPPENS to be perfectly threaded for a Zerk fitting. Why they failed to put a Zerk in it, I'll never know. But I did that to all my 4-speed cars and greased them regularly, made an AMAZING improvement.

Re: "Clunk" from clutch?

Ahh, I knew a certain member had owned a 4 speed car before.
Hmm, I think there are zerk fittings on this one, perhaps the previous owner did it. *Both* ends? I'll check that out here, thanks for the tip.

Re: "Clunk" from clutch?

The bar is hollow, so if you use the Zerk and splooge it until grease comes out both ends, that'll do it. If you don't have the Zerk, you'll have to take it apart and give it a hand job.

Re: "Clunk" from clutch?

Alright, found the grease fitting on the block side, pointing down. I'll put it up on ramps and do that one here in a bit.
For the life of me I can't find a fitting on the other side of the tube. The brake booster and steering shaft are somewhat blocking it. I can get my little hands on it, but I can't feel a fitting..?

Alright good timing! And fine choice of words... *cough*...

Re: "Clunk" from clutch?

I think there's just the one fitting...

And yeah, I hope the Zerk works, so you don't have to enjoy the alternative.

Re: "Clunk" from clutch?

Hmm, I think it helped somewhat. It's hard to tell, because it's kinda intermittent. I'll know when i'm driving home from work tomorrow in rush hour traffic.

I remember when I pulled the engine, separating that ball fitting from the engine, and pulling it out of the tube. It had remnants of what I could assume was once an O-ring, and some other stuff.
According to my haynes it looks like there are a bunch of parts in there.

Is it still possible to buy a rebuild kit for the z-bar?

Re: "Clunk" from clutch?

I don't recall an O-ring; but there was some sort of a felt seal type of thing that went in there. It didn't fit "tight" or anything like that, it just kind of hung out in the end. Not real effective. Seems like you could buy it separately at GM back in the 70s.

Doesn't seem like it would be too hard to invent something that would slip over the ball studs, and more or less close off the ends, to keep grease from running out.

Re: "Clunk" from clutch?

Hmm, it seems to be a lot better after driving home from work yesterday. I think i'm going to goober more grease in there again, I don't think I watched it come out both ends. Still does the kickback thing a bit, so i'll try it with more grease and see if that cures it.
Come to think of it, I do remember flushing that tube with degreaser to "clean it out", and I don't remember re-greasing it after. Go figure.
Hmm, hopefully one problem down, 99 to go...
