clutch-less shifting?
I have a t-5 on an 83 T/A. Just curious if anyone shifts without the clutch, how and when its done, potential harm to the trans ect....
Thanks

Re: clutch-less shifting?
how it's done: ramming the shifter into and out of gear
when its done: only at the most idiotic of times
potential harm to the trans: ummm.....destruction of the transmission
drive your car right please

Re: clutch-less shifting?
I know truck drivers do it with their 18speed+ trannies ever since they were made with synchros... I really dont have any intension on doing it. I was just curious if there would be any harm in trying given the proper knowledge.

Shagwell will notice this thread and chime in, if not in a few days, you can PM him. He has done it with his WC T-5 (until it broke...)
Do a search with his name, he's rattled off how to a number of times, once very recently to me actually..... ok ok, i'll find the thread;
....... I don't know why, but I couldn't find it, sorry
Anyway, yea, when you're accelerating your engine is pushing on the gears, and it's hard to get out of gear (so you use the clutch), when you're decelerating your car is leaning on the back of the gears, so it's hard to get out of gear (without the clutch), when your engine speed is matched to the cars movement then it'll just pull out of gear harmlessly, you let the revs drop while holding it against the higher gear (lightly!), and it'll just pop into gear. Do this until you're comfortable doing it, and it doesn't make any noises. This will happen quite leisurely.
If you're doing this to go faster:
His suggestion was a few different ideas,
rev the **** out of the car until it hit the rev limiter, or torque peak, this way your engine won't be making enough power to keep accelerating, so you'll have a split second where your engine and car are moving at the same speed, so you can slip out of gear easily.... Let the revs drop a tad while holding it against the next gear, then mash the gas again.
That's the gist of it. I think this would be slower than just holding your foot on the gas while using the clutch (power shifting) - but that's probably because I know how to powershift somewhat well, whereas I have no idea how to do a clutchless shift with any kind of speed or efficiency.
A clutchless shift is easier on the drivetrain that a powershift, no shocking the drivetrain sorta thing, but it's harder on the engine if you're revving it up to the rev limiter (IMHO)
