B&M Cable issue (megashifter and 3ft SD cable)

Has anyone had an issue with an older megashifter due to the cable not moving the right length (not far enough for the next gear)? Mine seems to come out of adjustment and my cable looks pretty old. I can pull the cable in and out of the sheath with about .5" of travel before it stops in each direction. Sometimes my gears change correctly sometimes they dont and it will go 1st then 1st, then 2nd..... So frustrating!

Basically looking for advice on replacing the cable, due to this being most like the issue, or replacing the whole shifter. From the looks of how the shifter itself functions, it really cant vary in cable travel distance shift to shift.

I would be gettting a 3' HD cable from B&M if I replace the cable or a quarter stick if I replace the entire shifter.

Re: B&M Cable issue (megashifter)

OK well.....I called B&M and they said (as I already suspected) the issues are due to the cable. Im going to replace with a 3ft Super Duty race cable.

Has anyone had issues with fitting this 3ft length? I have a th350 if that changes anything. Hoping to hear soon so I can send in the order. I think they make it in 4ft as well. Recommendations..??

B&M seems to have alot of cable issues what what I have noticed, a 3ft should be fine as its not going far and the 4ft would be way to long, hope things go well with the new cable

Re: B&M Cable issue (megashifter)

I am back to having issues with my mega shifter. Way back in 2007...been a while... the issue wasnt actually a bad cable but it became loose at the place it bolts against the shifter. Worked fine for the next 6 years, then I took it to a shop to have the speedo bullet replaced since it leaked and with the B&M torque arm bracket (TH350) it was going to be a pain to do on stands without lowering the trans a bit. After picking the car up, it would skip from 3rd to 1st when i downshift. So I checked the cable adjustment and it seemed fine when testing below the car; however it still gets out of whack on both upshifts and downshifts. The car is no fun to drive now as I dont want to blow my motor downshifting to 1st when Im trying to hit 2nd.

I bought a new 5ft cable and installed it and adjusted it to hit eat gear. Same problem still occurs. I routed this cable under the tailshaft rather than over it. Not sure if its in a "o" over the tranny or just a wide turn. I am suspecting that my issue could be either the linkage bolted to the tranny has slipped (i have to use a washer to hold it tight as it had play in it) or the mega shifter is out of spec.

Any advice on where to look or what to adjust?

Re: B&M Cable issue (megashifter)

Do you still have your original cable and original shifter? If not go get them at a junkyard. Then cut the brackets off of each where the cable clicks into and weld the original one onto the megashifter. Problem solved. I wrote a tech article on it years ago but don't have it anymore. But it's a pretty straight forward task.

If you don't have welding equipment, just go to a muffler shop. They'll hook you up.

Hope this helps.
