pinion bearing preload

is ~35 - 45 in/lb ok for new bearings? im using a solid spacer and I must have had this thing off about 10 times now but ~10 or ~40 is the only area I can hit.. seems inconsistent Im not sure what im doing wrong, I did put some oil on the bearings and the seal

Re: pinion bearing preload

A little on the high side, but should be OK.... 25 would be just about ideal....

Since you can only select shims in "steps", the increments may be just a little bit too large sometimes. But there's different thickness shims with it (like, .012", .015", .018", etc.); all of the shims aren't the same, like any 3 shims are the same as any other 3; so check each one carefully with a micrometer, and see if you can come up with any other combos. Seems like the total thickness usually wants to be in the .045" - .048" kind of neighborhood, but it's been a few days since the last time I set one up, so my memory could be a bit out of calibration.

Re: pinion bearing preload

nope thats right on, im at .047 right now, and .049 drops me back down to around ~10, cant hit .048 with the shims I was supplied... i didnt relize such a small change could make that much difference
for the first few attempts i was trying to measure the shims all at once, which was horrible because first thing I did was put them on the wrong side of the spacer and deform them all

Re: pinion bearing preload

side note, what kind of crackheads come up with these shim packs, how do I end up with like 20+ carrier shims of a whopping variety of 3 sizes, ****ing useless.. going out of my mind over here

im going to just put this carrier in with less then adequate contact pattern before I lose my mind and take a sledge hammer to the whole deal
