I recently install a ford 9 inch rear into my 1991 Camaro which I though was posi. Upon burnout inspection I see it is not. I know the third member it a posi unit so I am under the impression that the clutches are gone. My question is, can I rebuild the unit myself? I see a clutch rebuild kit on ebay for the 9 inch but I'm not sure how to tell if it's what I need. Let me know what type of info is needed to see what can be done.

 

There is nothing easier to rebuilt than a ford 9". All you need is wrenches and some grease.

A mag base would be 'proper', but not needed.

So there will be no pinion angle, crush bearing, gear wear pattern to setup if I rebuild the posi clutches?

 

Pinion angle? no.

Backlash is adjustable. Pinion depth is easy. You'll basicaly have it apart once or twice, three times tops until you get a good pattern. and it's all done on a work bench. then you pop the pumpkin back in the housing.

Sounds good. So I assume the ebay clutch kit should be what I need or were there different types of limited slip used in these rears?

Oh, one more thing. If all I am doing is replacing the clutches, will anything really need to be reset? I haven't got into it yet so I realize these questions may answer themselves but I appreciate the advice.
