is a kickdown neccessary?
I purchase a shift kit... pro built transgo shift kit.
I also got the anti-kick down kit from Summit (tci)...
why was the transmission made to shift out of OD, back into third if throttle is half open? I can't imagine what advantage this is...

Overdrive is for cruising, not accelerating. How fast are you planning on going that you can't tolerate a downshift into 3rd?

Some of GMs weaker engined heavy vehicles had the 85% TV sleeve stock. I know my 1987 GMC Jimmy driving 70 MPH would not downshift into 3rd with less than full throttle. My 1983 G20 Van took most of the pedal to drop back into 3rd.

With your 2.77's, you're going to be going pretty fast before you top out 3rd gear. Having said that, I like the aftermarket/Corvette TV plunger sleeve setup better than the stock one.
I hope you didn't pay $60 for the TCI kickdown valve. I had Dana add one of his to the TransGo kit when I bought it. I think it was $12 extra or something.
My guess as to why the odd stock valve was used? Towing. You wouldn't want it to stay in O/D at high throttle in that situation. Maybe they save 1 cent by having those holes drilled in the valve. Whatever the reason, the aftermarket style is the better style. Even at 75 mph it still takes more throttle before it down shifts.
I remember a few summers back driving through the mountains at 75-100 mph. Lots of speeding up and slowing down. Darn near every time I accelerated the car would down shift to 3rd. With the valve in there, as soon as you're doing 85+ mph, it stays in 4th gear. Same way you'd drive if you had a manual transmission (assuming a 5 speed manual)

No, no, you've got it wrong. When the boys in red and blue are after you is when you DO want to be able to make the 3-4 WOT shift.
Re: is a kickdown neccessary?
that's what i'm talking about...unfortunately, you can't out run that motorola...the factory OD servo really isn't up to the task of much throttle in OD. Not to mention that OD isn't meant for performance, and most factory engined cars will run faster in 3rd, as they won't actually pull 4th.
As for TV valve lock down/cable elimination, I firmly believe that it's a bad idea for a street car. It's harder on the pump and tends to make overly firm shifts all the time, thus taking out the rear planetary.

Personally, I hate it when a vehicle won't kick down out of O/D soon enough. I have to have the pedal almost to the floor on my Dakota before it will downshift, and it makes it seem sluggish and underpowered.

Re: is a kickdown neccessary?
Completely different kind of car but I have an 83 subaru that used to be a 3 speed automatic. Subaru set it up so that it would only downshift if you floored it (there was a button that got depressed by the accelerator pedal). That sucked. I would want it to down shift sooner. Not to mention that tranny never shifted right. So out it came and in went a 5 speed manual....MUCH BETTER!!!
