Crap! Has my tranny given up the ghost???!!!
I have a ProBuilt Street/Strip 4L60 in my 1992 Trans Am GTA with the following parts: (It's the stock tranny that I rebuilt @ 105,000 miles because 3rd started to slip, big surprise huh, lol)
Tru-Cool Transmission Oil Cooler, 18,000 GVW
Pro-Built 4L60 Transmission featuring the following:
ACT 2400 RPM Stall Converter w/Lock-Up(Custom for my cars exact specs at the time 6 years ago)
Corvette Servo and Housing
3-4th Gear Up-Shift Valve Mod (Ability for WOT in 4th)
GM HD Sunshell
Hi-Energy Borg-Warner Clutches and Bands
TransGo Recalibration Kit
Chevrolet S10 Pickup Shift Governor
It has 90,000 miles on it, about 70,000 of which are highway miles. I filled it with GM Dextron III when it was new, changed it using Dextron III @ 35,000 miles, changed it again @ 75,000 miles using the Dextron IV because the dealership no long had any Dextron III by this time. For the last 10,000 miles or so I've been manually shifting it down into 3rd from 4th/OD to make it easier to pass because I now commute on a 2 lane highway 100 miles a day.
Coming home tonight, leaving a stop light I noticed it would not leave 1st gear with normal throttle. I gimped the 2 lights home (thank god) and checked the fluid and adjusted the TV cable, which BTW is a new cable as of 15,000 miles ago and it was initially adjusted correctly. The TV cable adjust with no problems and the fluid level was a tiny bit high if anything and dod NOT smell burnt at all whatsoever. I let it cool and took it for a test drive. No change. I now have to nearly hit 4,500-5,000RPM and let go of the gas pedal at that RPM for it to shift. This method does however work for both the 1-2 and 2-3 shift. Before this starting about 8,000 miles ago, I had some issue with putting it in neutral for a drive through car wash and the car moving forward too fast yet I could still rev my engine and it not make a difference in speed. Sometimes it would not do this too though.
So.....What are your guys thoughts? Is it toast or is it something like my shift servo going out or my maybe my shift governor being screwed? God please say it's something stupid simply like the governor....
Thank guys! This really sucks because I'm totally broke and have a really long commute everyday

Dosent sounds like the GOV because it likley wouldnt shift at all . More than likley the throttle valve is stuck question is why? First I would pull the pan and see whats in there if there are silver and gold sparkles in the pan then thats your problem and its time for a rebuild or a trans again. Throttle valve rarely stick for no reason ussually if its right when you build one its do to some lttle trash that escaped the build but when its after many miles like yours its more likley to be something going wrong.

Actually, it could be the governor. A couple weeks ago during a fluid change, my governor got "stuck". I had to get every gear up to 4500-5000 before it would shift and then it would slam into the next gear. After they removed the bad governor and showed it to me, it was most definately sticking. Replacing it solved the problem immediately, although this may or may not be your problem.

Man, that really sound like what happened to mine. I would have to nail it, get the road speed up, let off and it would shift. But it wasnt in 2nd. I could keep going and manually back shift to 2nd (after getting it out of 1st) and it wouldnt go into 2nd. This means the 2nd circuit isnt working. Mine was the 2-4 band. If you can, and you think this is a possibility ,do this. Drop the pan, remove the filter, look to the passenger side front at the pan to case rim (where the gasket is mated) and you will see a small hole the gasket goes around. Note that hole. Next look up in the cavity where the front of the valvebody ends and the filter went. Look slightly rearward and use a light to see up in the opening. You will see basically the Reverse Drum and the left and right ends of the 2-4 band. Take compressed air and blow it into the small hole you previously located around the gasket mating rim. While looking into that area in front of the ValveBody. You should see the Band actuate as you compress and release the air pressure. That will eliminate the servo. If you see strips of material...thats the band friction material. Thats what was happened to mine. There was material in the fluid too. Check for a sticking Governor too, but most likely its not that.

Thanks for the replies guys! I just bought a MINT '93 300ZX 5-spd fwith cash for a commuter so I'll have time now to properly diagnose and fix my GTA.
I was forced to drive it to pick up the car that I bought, about 200 miles round trip, and it's now shifting at 3200-3800RPM and all 3 gears and OD are working too. Seems it's gotten a little better. I'm going to be driving it again about 125 miles to my friends house who has a workshop and a place to park it until I can work on it, I live in an apartment complex right now. I'm going to be renting a house in January so it might even be then until I begin to fix it.
Thanks!!!
