Re: 700r4 rating
well although there is no number written down, the theory is 450-500hp. now with a stock trans and a suped up motor, your not gonna be happy with your ride anyways because you cant get your power to the wheels properly. if you upgraded your trans with a basic upgrade and shift kit, you'd easily get away with 500hp. i just had a trans built that should be able to handle my nitrious 650hp engine.

I run a 700R4 behind the 496 in my 2nd gen '80 , all good parts in the build , and no problems so far . Cooling is key , it'll live behind good HP#'s with good build parts/maintence, mine has
Gotta love that 1st gear and the ability to carry 4.88's without having to stare at the tach needle in outer space on the highway.

i dont have nitrous, but 650hp is about what i have, what would i need to do to the trans to withstand the load?

Re: 700r4 rating
you can get built ones from several places for probably less than parts and labor to build it, unless you think you can tackle an auto trans rebuild and happen to have the needed tools and workspace. tci patc and several others sell them look into that most of them have hp ratings that they will garuntee their trans up to , but i have never had to go through warrenteeing one. ( i build my own)

500 HP reliably, anything more and it will fail eventually.

A well built 700 will hold up just fine IMHO.

Re: 700r4 rating
I agree 4l80 is basically a 400 with overdrive. I also think a decent 700 would be better for you, keeping that 3.0 first gear is a plus and by the time you beefed up a 350 its not much more for the better gas milage of the 700 and with the price of gas rising like every day i would keep that in mind. I also wouldnt want to make that 4l80 fit in the tunnel thats kind of a bft.

Re: 700r4 rating
i have a chevy 3500 with a th400 and after i bought my camaro i thought about swapping out my th400 for a 700r4 its nice having overdrive, with the 400 i have to turn 3000 rpm to go 65. i would like to have a lower first than the 400 provides does anyone know of first in the 400. anyways i would like to swap, but ive heard that a 700 is not a good truck tranny, but some rv have them, thats a heck of a lot of weight.
