2 rears need deeper gears?

Hello I have 2 rears one of which i need to put under my current car. I need opinions and info..as I havent swapped out the gears before.
I have a 85 3.42 with 26 spline axles and a 91 2.73 and 28 spline. I want to use the 28 spline for more strength, I dont want to buy gears for a 2 series carrier as this car is on a budget. Should i just use the 85 rear and see what happens...btw both need a posi unit as well. Or should I just try to find one ready to bolt in. I guess im looking for a way to get around having to buy another rear...help

Engine: 355 topped with Dart heads
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: Stock axle with 3.73's
Re: 2 rears need deeper gears?

Is the car stock? If so, 26 spline axles aren't the weak link. The ring gear itself will likely fail before the axles. However, if you have to replace the carrier anyway you might as well use the 28 spline axles.

If you spend some time on ebay you should be able to find a used posi unit, sometimes you can get them with gears as well. I'm running a posi unit and 3.73 gears from a late 80's S10, I bought the whole assembly for $150.

Re: 2 rears need deeper gears?

Personally I think the posi is the weak link, that's what I broke.
'80s S-10s are great to steal gears from, but their posi's are almost always (or always) GOV-LOK's. Yuck!! (ka BOOM!)

Re: 2 rears need deeper gears?

the car will not be stock..the motor is going to be a turbo build..Im not trying to spend a bunch of money on a rear that wont last to long anyway. Im going to use a regular radial for a radial tire class...(no not drag radial)..I will drive the car on street some but not much im sure...so I was wanting to stay away from a mini spool...but I still might consider it...like I said budget..

Sonix Ive hear that about gov-lok...what is the one to get...ive seen auburns..but they are pricey...

Batty..sounds like a good idea..im looking on fleabay...thanks

Any other opinions?
