Clutch/trans T56 Question
what would cause a clutch to grind if you push it all the way to floor? If you only push almost to the floor but not quite, and it shift perfectly. I'm not sure if grind would be the correct word, kinda like scrape.
Trans - T56
Car - 1996 Z28 (totaled).. i looked at it and might buy the t56 out of it, but i wanna know what is wrong with the clutch/trans/pedals or whatever...
Also, it wont stay in reverse.. you have to hold it in for it to work. If you hold it in, it works fine with no grinding or anything.
Any ideas?
Thanks for the help

Re: Clutch/trans T56 Question
What grinds/scrapes when you push the clutch? Is the the trans, making the noise when you try to shift gears? or is it the clutch, where just the act of pushing it makes the noise?

Re: Clutch/trans T56 Question
clutch, i tried in neutral and in first. Just pushing the clutch in to the floor does it.. doesnt sound like its coming from the tranny at all, and i think i remember a bit of a vibration from the clutch pedal itself, but im not sure on that.

Re: Clutch/trans T56 Question
Probably the throwout bearing then. Which is part of the clutch, which you'd no doubt be replacing anyway, since no one in his right mind would put a junk clutch of unknown age, mileage, etc. in their car. Not that I would intentionally accuse you of being in your right mind; but, just in case you are.

Re: Clutch/trans T56 Question
the grinding you hear is infact the TO bearing i have the same exact problem, reason being is that if your running 3rd gen pedals w/ 4th gen hydraulics the little pin that you put the master cyl's pushrod on is lower then the 4th gen pedals so its pushing more fluid through and extending the slave's pushrod out farther with is causing the grinding sound. The way to fix it is to use 4th gen pedals or pull your pedals out remove the pin and move it up a little higher. As for the reverse you need to get the plug for the reverse lockout(plug by the shifter) and either hook it up to a toggle switch or hook it to the wire on ur brake pedal that gets power to it when you press the brake pedal, you'll here a click from the tranny which means the lockout pin moved

Re: Clutch/trans T56 Question
Your reverse problem is common on the T56's from what I've read on here. There was a message thread on here quite a while back, probably over a year ago, from a member that explains how to fix it, including pictures. It involves removing the tailshaft housing and shimming the reverse shift fork. The way the factory assembled them, the shift fork doesn't travel far enough to engage the slider hub fully on reverse gear. This causes it to disengage or grind when a load is applied to reverse gear. I think VB Mike was the member who posted it IIRC. Just do a search with "T56 Reverse Repair" in the forum search engine and you should be able to find the post.

Actually I made that writeup lol https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tr...6-reverse.html (Tony's T-56 Reverse fix)
Reason the clutch is grinding when it's put to the floor but normal when not sounds like it's cause the fork is grinding on the side of the pressure plate from excessive travel. There really is only about just over 1" of movement before the fork contacts the edge of the pressure plate. Normally this is a problem when guys install them into a 3rd gen and keep the same peddles like the one guy was talking about. I'am thinking there might be a problem with a part worn out or even the fork bent a bit all though that would surprise me either way could be a simple fix like grinding away some of the meat off the fork or you could make your master cylinder adjustable so it gives less throw, have a writeup on that to https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tr...ghlight=master (clutch engaugement adjustment with T56???) but moving the pin sounds like a easy fix to.
How are your peddles are they all even across or is the clutch peddle sticking up some more then the rest?

Re: Clutch/trans T56 Question
In case all of you people that keep talking about it doing this in a thirdgen haven't noticed yet, THE TRANS IS STILL IN THE WRECKED 96 CAR. So whatever might happen AFTER a swap, is some whole other issue entirely; DOESN'T APPLY HERE.

Re: Clutch/trans T56 Question
Yeah were aware of that just if he decides to use all the same stuff he will probably run into the same problems.
Re: Clutch/trans T56 Question
Hey Tony. Sorry about forgetting who posted the repair article. That was ages ago, and I was too damn lazy to do a search.
I have to agree. The reverse problem is internal to the trans itself, so it really doesn't matter what car it's in. Of course Sofa should know that. How many times has he said in previous posts, "the motor and trans don't care what car it's bolted into".
