too cool?
I've heard from people before that a auto trans can get too cool if you use a cooler without a thermostat or without putting it into the radiator. I was thinking about putting a cooler on mine but i need to know if this is true. Is there a certain operating temperature it has to be at?

Re: too cool?
cooler the better. unless you in the artic haha. better to run the cooling lines seperate from radiator into an aux. cooler. be sure you got good air flow through it. If cannot get good airflow there are coolers our there with fans mounted to em for that purpose

Re: too cool?
guys have done it before...do not under any circumstances use fuel line. get transmission cooler hose. its a different rubber to withstand the trans fluid. napa has a heavy duty hose thats the same (red colored). we had guy at our local drag strip use fuel line and it blew apart and burnt the front half of his car down because the trans fluid got on the headers. another alternative kinda pricey but good lookin and heavy duty is braided steel hose avaliable though jegs or summit or local hot rod shops

im not too sure about restriction compaired to an accual tranmission cooler. i'd stick with what parts are made for. its usually cheaper in the end

Re: too cool?
it IS possible to get a transmission too cool. I needs to go from the external cooler to teh radiator. If it does not go through the radiator, moisture will build up and cause sludge, which isn't ever a good thing.
Even vehicles that come with an aux. cooler still go through the radiator, such as the Z-71 pickups.

Re: too cool?
we've been putting transmissions in for over 20 years. its our primary business at our shop. most notably for transmission cooler problems is dodge pickups. the radiators in them plug up for almost no reason at all and causes the tranny's to burn up. dodge's factory fix is to eliminate the radiator (bypass) and install an aux. cooler as a stand alone unit. im not tryin to argue a point, jus stating we've never had any issues with it.

i have never heard of this and i have talked to all kinds of transmission shops. i work at a transmission parts place and have regular contact with many customers. what would be the point of having a transmission cooler if you were going to run it through the factory one to heat it up again? either run it through the factory one then the auxiliary one or the auxiliary one by itself. i bet if you trace the correct flow of the one on the z71 you will find it goes to the radiator first then the aux. one.
