Disconnect TV cable for dyno runs?

I have heard of ppl disconnecting the TV cable and pulling it out half way to keep pressure up for dyno runs to keep the trans from downshiftin in third gear

I want to re-dyno my car this weekend and being a 700r4, i cant keep it from downshifting below 3800 rpms and i never get to see my TRUE power curve and torque

Is this safe on the trans? will half pressure be enough for WOT for 3 runs?

I wil also be locking my converter up at a low mph in third so i can see more power to the ground. Will this effect anythign on the trans, like burning up clutches?

Go to the wrecking yard, find an old 80s chevy/gmc truck, van, suburban, blazer/jimmy with the 6.2 diesel. Take the governor. Swap the governor into your TPI car. It will keep the engine from downshifting above about 2,500-3,000 rpm. I put one in my 700r4 in my Van when I went to dyno. Made a 3rd gear pull from 1,800-6,500 rpm with my old 305.

No I wouldnt trust that method to be safe on the trans.

The computer is already set up to lock the converter above 70 MPH, which at 3500 RPMs you're faster than that. I dont see how manually locking it will help.

Re: Disconnect TV cable for dyno runs?

my converter is set to lock up at 118mph now but it used to be 88mph stock. for the dyno run i wanted to lock it up at 40mph in third and do the pull from whatever rpm that was with the TV disconnected. Before when i dyno'd it, each time the converter locked up it showed 10-15whp and wtq more.

but now i guess i'll set it to lock at 63mph which is just over 3700ish rpms from what it looks like on my tach and just do my pulls from 3700-5500rpms again...kinda dissappointing. but thats where the power is so why look elsewhere?

Re: Disconnect TV cable for dyno runs?

That would lower the line pressure and cause the trans to slip and burn up.
There is no easy solution for that problem.
