speedo acting up on T5
Hi guys,
I have a 91 formula WS6 T5 with a 305 TPI. My speedometer has been acting up a bit. It happens under load in 5th gear only. It is fine in the rest of the gears. When I step on the gas, the needle will drop to 0 mph. When I let my foot off, it goes back up to the correct speed. It is worse when it is cold, and the problem disappears when it is warm.
What do you think is causing my problem? Bad speed sensor? How do you diagnose the cause?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Mine used to do that too.
It needs the "sleeve" that the gear is in. You probably still have the crappy chinesium one that came in the car. It's so totally weenie, it lets the gears move to the side and mis-align enough to no longer spin the cable. A replacement one is steel. Unbelievably better. It's about like comparing a kid's toy plastic screwdriver to a Snap-On screwdriver, except even more like that.

If you're lucky, it hasn't torn up the gears; but it probably has. I'd strongly recommend having AT LEAST the driven gear on hand for when you change it out.

Re: speedo acting up on T5
Does the transmission need to come out in order to replace these gears?

How accessible are the sleeve and driven gear? Is it complicated to change them? Is the driven gear also made up of plastic?
thanks
thanks
