TH350 or 700r4 tranny?

im looking to replace my warn out T-5 tranny.
since im doing an engine build and im hoping the engine will put out somewhere 400+hp.
i read afew articals about the TH350 and they seem to be really good. i found a kit for $1099 has a 400hp rating. comes with Tq converter. and i believe it came with a trans break. but the Tq conver was way to small, 1400,

anyways i havnt checked into the 700r4 trans yet.
since i heard really good sutff about the TH350. but now i see alot of people are running a 700r4. so ill be checking out prices.

my question is. is there a difference between the 2?

Re: TH350 or 700r4 tranny?

well you have a few things to consider here

th350 will be the same length as the t5 if it is the truck 9" tailshaft version, so that you dont have to find another driveshaftlength

you will need torque arm mount bracket from summit etc to mount a th350 in

700r4 will need to have the third gen f body tailshaft housing and 700r4 mount bracket and mount to be put under a third gen f body

700r4 takes more $ to build to make as reliable as a th350 at a certain engine hp strenth requirement

especially the pre-87 ones

if anything at least avoid the 82 83 84 700r4's

87-92 are the best and non ECM

good luck

No one has mentioned the basics.
Turbo 350 was GM's medium duty 3 speed trans.
700r4/4l60 was GM's medium duty 4 speed trans.
4th is overdrive.

Re: TH350 or 700r4 tranny?

I just went through this debate not too long ago. I calculated everything and the th350 came out like 300 bucks cheaper. Alot of places want a th350 core and if you dont have it they want an additional 200 bucks. But I found a 700R4 that has a warranty for one full year on performabuilt no matter if I race it everyday or drive it like a grandma. I'd check out probuilt and performabuilt.
