Re: Rearend gears
What are you calling wound out? The red line on a factory thach no longer applies since you have a new motor. A 3.08 is an all around gear. Check your cam specs, generally as HP goes up so does you're rpm range. Most likely, "wound out" is now closer to 6000 than 4000.

Re: Rearend gears
No, a 300HP engine is never going to make it to 8000RPM, if we're talking SBC....
Anyway, 3.08's are fairly sleepy. 3.73's are a great gear set with a T5 overdrive tranny. Not as good on the freeway (mileage), but a lot more grunt taking off.

No, i'm not wrong, you're mistaken, and i'm right. I don't even feel the need to sugar-coat that assumption either. I didn't even ask what your engine was, what the combo was, etc etc etc. I won't even bother explaining why I can safely make this assumption, because anyone with any knowledge of Chevy SBC setups would know the answer.

Re: Rearend gears
There you go...You said it right there. Go get a better tach and then come back and tell us you twist that 300 horse to 8 grand. You Sir, are old enough to know better than that.

Re: Rearend gears
Yea, Razincayne (and all other sane members on here) understand this, and can help you fill in the blanks.
Your tach is wrong, a very common problem in these cars, or your aftermarket tach is wrong, either way...
It sounds like you really have no idea what's even in your engine, a "custom chip" means all of... 'diddley' as they say. You don't have enough cam to hit 8000RPM, or the right valve train or rotating assembly.
Smartey pants. I like that. My pants are smarter than you eh?

Re: Rearend gears
if it is possible to hit 8000rpms. and doing it alot. that engine will soon die. and it seems like its coming up quick since you said your making it rev that high alot.
but i say get higher gears. i got 3.08s on mine. there great on the highway. i would look somewhere inbetween 3.08 and 3.75.

I am not sure what exactly is going on in here, but I want my new motor to spin to 8K.

Re: Rearend gears
Was your car originally a V6 car? Or is your guage cluster from a V6?.....That would certainly cause a problem in your RPM readings. Whats the factory Redline on your in dash tach? This will tell us if this is the problem......also mathamatically speaking(although I'm not a math wizard) 8000rpm+, with 3.08 gears & 5 speed w/ factory size tire would give you one hell of a land speed record for a 3G F-body!!!!!!!!!!!
