Before installing a T5 advice

I've new to manual trannies and I'm about to install a T5 in my 91 GTA behind a stock TPI 350. I have all the parts I need to do the swap from a complete 91 Formula with 97K and a WC T5 donor car. It was shifting fine before removal. New clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, flywheel will be resurfaced and pilot bearing will be installed. Any advice I should have done to the T5 before I install it. Not looking to try to make it race worthy or bulletproof or I would be going with a T56. Thx.

Re: Before installing a T5 advice

No, sounds like you've got a pretty good idea of where it's going to go.

One thing you might want to do is read through online170's T-56 thread; there's some things in there that you'll be doing the same for your T-5 as he did for his T-56, notably cutting the holes in the firewall and trans tunnel. Be aware that the T-5 shifter hole doesn't need to be quite as large as the T-56 one, it wants to be about the same width and the same toward the front of the car but abotu 1½" - 2" smaller toward the rear. Pay attention to that and to the master cyl cutout.

DO NOT push the clutch pedal until the entire clutch, slave cyl, fork, and all that is installed!!!! In fact, I would recommend not even hooking the master cyl to the pedal until AFTER the rest of it is ready.

Other than those little precautions, like I said it sounds like you've got it covered.

Re: Before installing a T5 advice

Thx. for the reply. The 91 Formula is a factory 5 speed car so, I have perfect templates to go by. I'm going make templates of them and post them on here to make it easier for everyone. Would you recommend having some new seals on the T5? I always put new front and rear seals on a A/T before installing it.

Re: Before installing a T5 advice

Sofa, there was a shim and a lock ring on the crank between the flywheel. What is its purpose? Is it needed when installing my CF DF clutch?

Re: Before installing a T5 advice

The rear seal, it would be worth changing, if you can find a trans shop around your locale that can also change the bushing without tearing down the trans (requires a special puller with real thin jaws); if not, don't worry about it. I'd leave the front alone, they hardly ever fail. Remember, a manual trans doesn't run near as hot as an auto, so rubber parts don't deteriorate as bad.

Whatever goodies came with whatever flywheel you're using from your donor car, go ahead and re-use it.

Re: Before installing a T5 advice

So why are you not suppose to push the pedal without having everything hooked up?

Because you'll "pop" the slave cylinder.

Oh okay, Your not suppose to push on it when its connected to the slave and is full of fluid and bled. I was pushing on mine, but my line is not connected to my slave yet.

I just thought I would post these for others. They are from a factory 5 speed car I stripped a few years ago.

Re: Before installing a T5 advice

Bingo was his namo!! I will be cutting out the area around the MC,Steering column and the CC vacuum line holes and scanning it. The tunnel cut out I'm going to get exact measurements with reference points for an exact cut in a A/T car. For picky people like myself.
