mid 80s trannys

ok, I bought my 86 Iroc in november now the guy I bought it off of is a mechanic and did all the work on the car as the recepts are all there. Now he was giving different hints about the tranny, he put over 2600 into the transmission alone. Now he was saying about how the internals couldnt be found to rebuild the 700r4 that was orignally in the car. I just started to drive the car and when I have it in drive it shifts four times before I decide to put it into over drive then it continues to shift another two gears. Im wondering if its a corvette tranny six speed. I believe its the 4L80e transmission any help would be great thanks

P.S my friend has the same 86 Iroc as me but with a 350 and he said his doesnt get off the line and keep pulling like mine does. Mine gets off the line better then any of the camaros around here. All I know is mine is a stock 305 with a rebuilt motor with only 40k on it and the tranny has 15k on it, his has the same mileage too.

Why not ask the previous owner?

Look at the pan, take a pic and google transmission chart...compare your pic to that of others and you should be able to tell what it is.

Re: mid 80s trannys

Both the th700r4 and the 4L80E are 4-speed transmissions with lockup.

The Corvette 6-speed is a manual transmission.

Re: mid 80s trannys

it's not a 4l80e because it would need a special controller. the factory ecm in your car can't control it. the internals CAN be found to rebuild the original tranny that was in the car. we sell them at work all day long.

the shifting prolly has to do with the torque convertor. the tc is locking in 2nd, unlocking when shifted to third, locking in third....then you shift into OD and the tc unlocks at the same time, then the tc locks up again.

a good stall converter will make your car get off the line better than most cars.
