Posi Question

Alright, so this kid I go to school with just bout a roller Camaro and he offered to sell me the rear end. The rear end is posi and has disc brakes. Both of those benefit me a lot because I have an open diff and rear drums. The only problem the kid says that the posi needs new clutch packs or something like that. I'm not very knowledgeable when it come to posi. I have been doing some research to try and enlighten myself and I have learned a lot about posi. I also read an article on TGO about shimming the diff. My question, assuming that the clutches are bad, can I replace the clutches? Would I need a new carrier? Would the shimming process fix the issue at hand? Also what price would be resonable for the rear end, all brake equipment is included. Thank in advance for the help.

Re: Posi Question

The DETROIT units are rebuildable. If someone has made the mistake of an AUBURN unit its toast---unrebuildable.

Re: Posi Question

How would I tell the difference between a Detroit or an Auburn unit? How much would parts to fix it cost?

Re: Posi Question

The parts car the kid picked up is a 86 Z28 I'm not sure what motor it came with all I know is that the rear is original and it is posi. With that being said, assuming the clutches are bad, is it fixable? How much would it cost to fix? I am going to go look at it Monday. I have an idea of what to look for but if anyone has suggestions on what I should look for input is appreciated. Thanks, John

Re: Posi Question

Count the bolts on the rear cover. Only the 9 bolt rears can be fixed by shimming, and even then, that only works if it's been slipping for a short amount of time. If it's a 10 bolt rear, then it has an Auburn, which is not rebuildable as the other guys stated. The only sure cure for a toasted 10 bolt posi is replacing it with a better, Eaton posi carrier, which will set you back $400-$500.

Re: Posi Question

Thanks for all the help. I was supposed to go look at it yesterday but the kid forgot and left town for the day. Hopefully I can take a look at it to see if it's 9 of 10 bolt. Do you guys think I'm better off just leaving this alone or is it worth it for the disc brakes?
Thanks, John
