Re: 9 bolt or 10

No plastic drain plug means its a 10-bolt. Count the number of bolts holding the cover on. 9 bolts means its a 9-bolt rear and 10 bolts means its a 10-bolt rear. That is where they get their name.

If you dont have a jack, get your digital camera and start taking pictures from different angles and see if you can count the bolts

I personally would never do that, as I had a friend killed using wood to support his car!

Positive. Like stated before, no drain plug means it's a 10 bolt. 9 bolts weren't availible in '86 either, assuming that is the original rear.

I'm positive YOU need to find a way to verify. This isn't rocket science.

Re: 9 bolt or 10

I would agree with the wood statment, but if you get some 2x (at least 2x6)somthing that you can back the car onto, use them like a ramp you will be fine. Just don't be stupid about it. If it's a clutch use chock blocks.
If the top of your driveway if flat then it angles down back it up til your tires are on the edge of the flat part and the back hangs over the angle, then look. (more clearance)

Actually yes they were available starting in 1985 on Trans Ams, and in 1987 on IROC's. But since the car in question is an '86 IROC, yep, it didnt come with a 9-bolt rear.

What do you mean you cant get under the car? My car is lowered and I can still look under the muffler and see the rear end and count the bolts.

Re: 9 bolt or 10

The 9 bolts are a little stronger than the 10 bolts, and most of them came with disc brakes. They have a 7.75" ring geat rather than a 7.5". Other than that, there's not much difference. They are hard to find parts for, but 10 bolts are a dime a dozen.

Depending on the gear ratio, the rear end, especially with the PBR's, is desirable.
