rearend question
i know i'll probably be flamed for not properly searching this, but just looking for some opions and suggestions.i'm looking to put a 350 in my trans am,fully built to 500+hp,built 700r4 with stall and shift kit.the rear is a crappy one wheel driven 2.7?,what i want to know is what could i put in there as a band-aid until i can get a nice built rear so i can actualy launch the car.looking for a posi with 3.73 gears that will justbolt up.i heard earlier 3rd gens had posi 3.73 in them, any info on that and what years would be great.also what about a 4th gen,the 3.42 will it stand up to a roll start and hop on the throttle, and will that just bolt up.a hard throttle launch is not going to be done until a built rear can go in,but just looking to at least take the car to a meet coming up soon.if i put one of these in it's not gonna explode just from normal driving is it?any help would be really appreciated.

Re: rearend question
if you are gonna stay 10-bolt..., then-
make sure to get a 90-92 thirdgen rear, or 4th gen rear. They have the 28-spline axles. Most 89 rears, and all 88 or earlier, have the weaker 26-spline axles, which would be liable to snap on you. Well, with all that 500+ Hp, any 10-bolt will be liable to snap on you lol.
If you arent gonna use it as a daily driver or anything, look into a full spool kit from summit or somewhere. Getting a good spool would probably be stronger than any of the commonly available posi carriers.
Also, look into a girdle cover, and weld the axle tubes. Finally, i think they have something to replace the pinion crush ring called a solid pinion spacer. I would get that too.

Re: rearend question
thanks for the reply, but do you think a stock rear with posi will hold up to a occasional trip down the strip(not dragstrip)just at cruising speeds?that's what i'm looking for,i know anything like wot from a dig would destoy it,just need it to cruise every once in awhile, until i get a built one.

Re: rearend question
If your going to be putting down 500+/- horses and want it to last until you get a built one then definately don't take it to the track. If your going to be putting in a built rear eventually I wouldn't put any money towards a rear that is eventually going to get replaced anyway, just drive on the open 2.7 until you get your built rear.

Re: rearend question
You can get deeper gears (like 3.73/4.10) from S-10 trucks and blazers as well. You will still need the 28 spline axle shaft hardware from an 89-92 third gen, and the wrecking yards have plenty.

Re: rearend question
i really appreciate the responses.i was thinking of just doing a junkyard swap for a posi rearend, hopefully no more than 250-300 if that.just to hold me over.but if i leave the rear that's in now,you guys think i'll be able to give some gas from a good roll.i would think it would be a dead hook that would give the rear end most stress and destoy it is that right?also i'm worried about the shift kit in it.how hard is that gonna be on the rear?
