t-5 durability
t-5 durability
im having built a 383 stroker motor for my 92 z-28 with the parts we are using we should get 500 crank horsepower and 500 ftlbs.
i was wondering if anyone had any experience running the stock t-5 with a motor like this will it hold up or should i definately switch to a t-56 or just rebuild the t-5 with better parts?
thanks guys...

Re: t-5 durability
There are so many different opinions...
I had my T5 rebuilt with G-force stuff; some guys here like it and some have still scattered parts all over the road. Nobody really complains about the T56 and I think the TKO 500/600 transmissions are plenty stout as well. They all cost about the same, so you can pick from here.
Your stock T5 is already living on borrowed time. It can last an eternity if you drive it like grandma; but, if you're hard on it, it will die a quick death behind even a stock TBI 305.Your transmission just isn't designed with real hp in mind.
I wouldn't do another G-force tranny if I had to do it again. You just need to pick how many gears you want. 5 (TKO) or 6 (T56)??????

Re: t-5 durability
my friend has a 92 rs w/ a t5 and a 400 under the hood making 500+ hp and he has had the tranny rebuilt once and it just about needs it again and i believe he put less that 3-4k miles on it. just think if u have all that power, are u going to drive like an old lady? he cant...
i would go tko 600 to be on the safe side unless u want the 6spd

My first T5 kill was in a 90 Firebird with a transplanted 400 sbc in it. Not pretty. And then a 2nd, a 3rd....
TKO is cheaper, too, because you don't need a special flywheel like the T56 guys have to buy. Just standard hardware.

Re: t-5 durability
For that application just about any T5 is on borrowed time. I grenaded one wiht a mild 350 had it rebuilt and so far so good, but I don't power shift it or beat the car that hard. I would try and find a deal on a used T56 setup from a 94-97 fbody. My friend got one for 900 and that included everything. And his 383 LT1 in an almost 5000 pound caprice hasn't hurt it yet

I've got many low 13s high 12s runs in on my T5 so far. I'm using a drag radial too. Hasn't killed on me yet, but I'm sure it will soon.

Sofa does standup in Vegas. I've seen his show a couple times at King's Boobie Bar-None and carb shop.
