Re: another tv cable question
The 82 wouldn't have had a 700; that was introduced in 1983. No "features from the future". It would have had a 200C. :barf:
However, the 350 is a reasonable replacement; same size, same length, same crossmember, same drive shaft, same # of gears. Just, no lockup clutch (the "C" in "200C").
The 350 doesn't have a TV cable. It uses a vacuum modulator. It's on the right-hand side of the trans, pointing to the rear, just above the pan.
Go to the parts store and get a new one. Look for the one with a RED STRIPE. It doesn't matter what car it's listed for (or not); look for the RED STRIPE. Not a green stripe, not a magenta stripe, not a big black can; one with a RED STRIPE. I'd suggest looking up "good runner" applications: try a 71 Monte Carlo 400 4-barrel, or a 73 Grand Prix 454. Doesn't matter though; you can look up EVERY car that came with either a Powerglide, 350, or 400, and come up with a total of 4 part numbers; when you open up the boxes, one will be the red stripe, one the green stripe, one the magenta stripe, and one the big black can. You want the RED STRIPE one. No other. It will cost an arm and a leg, like this one here; and will of course look just like it.
Install it. Make sure vacuum, just regular common ordinary manifold vacuum, is hooked up to it, and that the line isn't kinked. Drive the car. If it shifts early and soft, take off its vacuum line, and you'll see up in the nipple, a little screw; turn the screw clockwise ¼ turn. Test drive it again. Keep doing that until it shifts about right. If it shifts late and hard, adjust it the other way. You want to get it to where the engine revs to about 2200-2400 in 1st and 2nd with very light throttle, normalish driving, and then shifts crisply.
Kickdown is provided by a cable. Looks alot like a 700's TV cable, but it's not. Without that cable installed and operating properly, the transmission will "work" fine, except that it won't readily kick down when you floor it. You can get the cable from GM, and a bracket at the junkyard, if you want. Hopefully your carb linkage has the little thingy for it; if not, depending on what carb you have, you may be able to buy it. But if you can't get the cable to work for whatever reason, it's not a big deal; not like the 700, where the trans will be DESTROYED without it. The 350 isn't like that.
Pop quiz: which color stripe do you want to look for on your new modulator?
