gooey mess inside rear drum??
my car is a 1989 camaro RS with a 305 tbi, mileage is 165K. i rotated my tires because im getting a strange noise out of the suspension at lower speeds. i removed the rear tire, i noticed the rear driver side drum was covered in a greasy substance. i removed the drum and the inside was covered in grease. i think its time for a new rear bearing and a new seal. how difficult is replacement? i have never had a rear axle apart on any of the vehicles i have owned and i was wondering what im getting into. im setting millage records with the camaro, i have never owned a vehicle this high in millage. this car is still in fantastic shape (no winters) so im happy to continue to fix what ever it needs.

its grease or just dirty fluid?if its not a leaky wheel cylinder then yea your right about the rear.I would leave rebuilding it to someone who knows what they are doing, but thats me.Mine went out and I just got a good used one from the j yard and replaced it if you go this route check it out good and get the gear you need or want.good luck

i know its not a wheel cylinder. i replaced both last summer, and the fluid is much too thick to be brake fluid. it has to be axle seals. i was thinking about replacing the bearing as well. how much more work is it to replace the bearing?
