Driveshaft measurement question
How much slack should you have?
I got a custom driveshaft made, and its an inch too long. I double checked the measurements, and they are match what I told them. They are on the receipt too. It needs another half an inch to even get into the rear yoke. I figure another half inch for slack.
I'll call them tomorrow, I won't say who they are yet. Hopefully they will fix it.
I'm using a longer output shaft and a 700r4 tailshaft housing on my th350. It was built this way so I could use my stock driveshaft. When I told them (driveshaft gettin place) that my output shaft stuck out 2.25 inches, they got kinda confused. I don't see why this should be a problem though, they just have to do a little more thinking. I'm using a 9 inch rear also.
The stock driveshaft fits but is about half an inch too short. It only goes past the seal about half an inch. This is probably fine, but I want the most grab I can get.
Did I somehow make a mistake here? I can't believe these guys would make a mistake, their products are so good, but today when I was in there was a bit of arguing going on with the guy that made my driveshaft and what appeared to be some customers. I don't like this crap rolling through my head.....

Re: Driveshaft measurement question
Slide the slip yoke into the transmission all the way. Pull it back out 1". Measure center to center between the u-joint on the slip yoke and the differential yoke. That's the measurement you need.
Cutting down a driveshaft isn't bad. They'll cut the weld, shorten the length then weld the end back on. If it's too short, a new tube needs to be made. My last driveshaft needed to be longer so I had them take the 1350 yokes off the old one and make me a longer one. The yokes are expensive. The shaft tube isn't.

Re: Driveshaft measurement question
So an inch of slack. Well thats exactly what I need taken off. If I were to install the driveshaft on the rear first, and then slide the trans onto it, there would be 0 slack, the way it is right now.
Hopefully they will fix it for free. I gave them the right measurements. I would imagine it being around 100 bucks to cut out an inch and reweld.
Your car looks good with the new paint!

Re: Driveshaft measurement question
They'll probably have to rebalance it after welding the yoke back on. I can't see it costing too much.
The flat black paint looks mean and the flames over the hood and fenders look sharp. Just don't stand too close to look at it. It was entirely painted with spray cans. I will have some sponsor decals over the rear wheels this year so it's not going to be totally decal free as I had originally planned.

I took it in today, and yep, they have to rebalance it, so its gonna be another darn week.
Spray bombed eh? Thats funny. I did jeep like that and it really didnt turn out too bad, until you got real close. I think we used clear ontop too.
