Will My Trans Handel it??

I have a 91 Camaro. It has the 700r4 trans. I recently put in an LT1 engine. Only thing done to the trans is a VSS, Reluctor, and a TCI Lockup Kit. I want to upgrade the gears to a 3.73 posi. I have had people tell me that My trans won't handel it. Will it or won't it? Anyone know for sure?

Re: Will My Trans Handel it??

If the motor is mostly stock it will. The best 350 tpi made 245, the lt1 made 275 IIRC. I think the trans stock is good for about 350-400hp. Just make sure you have the TV cable hooked up correctly. If not, it'll blow real quick.

I think the LT1 needs a higher stall converter, but I could be wrong.

My LT1 is in and workign great, I have been driving it for a year and a half now. I was just worried about weather the higher gears in the differential would caus an issue.

No, they will probably help the trans last longer, it won't slip as much, and is doing less work. If your worried about it, install a trans cooler, or a deep pan. Heat kills trannies.

The gears themselves won't kill the tranny. However I'm guessing if you did the transplant you have headers, exhaust and a couple bolt ons too. Unfortunetly an automatic transmission basically works by eating itself over time so evetually you will have to rebuild it. But the gearing change shouldn't adversly affect the life of your 700

Re: Will My Trans Handel it??

Thanks for all the good info. I do plan to replace my 700r4 with either a rebuilt one that is built up to handel more hp. or replace it with a 4l60e that has been built up to handel more hp. Because I eventually want to do new heads, cam, and exhaust to increas power up to hopefully around 400hp or more if possible. Funny... In hind site I should have just saved up for an LS2 ha ha. or LS6. Mmm yummy

Re: Will My Trans Handel it??

You could strengthen/rebuild the trans yourself. I've heard its really not that bad if you buy a few tools. I think the kits are only around 400 bucks. I've never done it, but I want to!

I think the 60e would be a good choice since you could plug it right in. Don't have to worry about that stupid cable anymore.
