Re: stock rear end to 3.42 rear
It is a direct bolt in replacement, with the likely exception of brakes and emergency brake, which depends on some things like the year of the car the rear end came out of. These problems are likely easily solved. Scouring the archives here should lead to some answers which I don't have right now...
Re: stock rear end to 3.42 rear
just research for speedo drive and driven gears online (also easy to do)
maybe a sticky here???
ill be doing the same any day now from 3.23 to 3.73

You'll need to change the speedometer gears. IIRC, 17 tooth and 41 tooth.
I have a 1LE prop valve to install when I do my drum to disk swap, but I dunno if it is absolutely necessary. I have seen someone else do the swap without swapping the prop valve and get away with it.
And you'll need the parking brake cables.
Look around here, or even better, do a search. This has been covered a million times.

Are you replacing the gears by them selves or the whole rear end? Thread Starter

Re: stock rear end to 3.42 rear
ive gone ahead and changed the gears. went pretty well. definetly a better pickup and quicker acceleration. speedometer is off now and i hope to fix that soon as well. one lil issue, when i drive im hearing a small winning noise. my guess would be that i need a few more shims to one side or the other. anything else that could cause this. i dont wanna wear these gears out.

If you replace the entire rear diff you'd have an LSD and disc brakes.
