Ok when i put the 3:73 posi in how much of difference will it make from my 2:73 non posi?

People have told me when i race a camry or civic or something they would keep up b/c of my gearing well now what will happen?

thanks,
kevin

Re: 3:73 racing

The 3.73 compared to the 2.73, you will leave harder off the line, but your fuel economy will dip a little.

Exactly But you also would beable to spin the tires easier, so practice launching without spin and ur off!

Re: 3:73 racing

My wife switched from a 3.08 open to a 3.73 posi....Had to relearn how drive the car in Autocross!

Coming outta the corners, it would come loose MUCH easier.

As for racing r i c e....If you don't blow the tires away on launch, they shouldn't be a proble, on the bottom end. They might on the top end, depending on your car & theirs.

Re: 3:73 racing

When i race i want a dead stop and as log as a 1/4 mile. I just wanted to make sure that it would make my 1/4 mile time faster.
If i run a 15.7 now what will it make me do with 3:73 posi?

Night and day difference kind of better - it will feel like you added 50 or 60hp.

Gears and exhaust are BY FAR the most important initial mods to any 3rdgen - changing to a better gear ratio makes such a huge 'seat of the pants' difference, most people don't realise just how much different it actually is untill they do it!

Dont count on it with the auto. With a 5-speed it would be no problem.

Re: 3:73 racing

Good start... build from the ground up... next ur trans, look into a 5 speed if you want to chirp. I know you can do it with a auto, you would need some kind of kit (shift, valve body etc) which is easy stuff. I always get the ratio vs chirp mixed up, but a 'chirp' is with the trans... you should work on that later (next inline)

Re: 3:73 racing

I'll say my old 350 w/ 3.23 gears and automatic was WAY slower / sluggish feeling that my new setup (read sig). I'm trying to learn to handle spinning the tires at 30+mph in 2nd and 3rd gear when I mat the gas pedal.

me too

on another note, when i swapped my 2:73 to 3:73 in my 10bolt, i swapped in a billet "superior" servo in my old 700r4 with a stock caprice 350 and it would chip the tires in second and third, then put on that funky little sonnax spring and it starts to hurt your neck, and probably the trans/ujoints/ect, but its fun.

If thats true, then you might be better off saving the money for a 9" or 12-bolt setup... that will eat your 10-bolt (and all that follow it) for lunch.

My car makes probably 300-320rwhp, and I've gone through 3 rear ends in 2 years. It doesn't take much to break them.

Re: 3:73 racing

The reason i wanted that much hp is b/c i wanted to some alot of them dumb kids on the road with their civics. How much hp do you think i would be happy with? I can get a 383 stroker that an engine shop by me makes and they start at 400 hp so mid 300's to the rear idk if i would be happy with that?
thanks

the 10 bolt has a small 7.5" ring gear and equally small pinion gear, they are the weak point and are usually the first things to fail. everything about the carrier assembly is small. If you are really planning a healthy motor, save your pennies for a 9" or 12bolt.

thats more up to you to decide. If the car is eventually going to be a weekend/fun car and not a DD, go all out, no matter what you start with you will eventually be looking for more power. Just be prepaired to upgrade the rest of the drivetrain and suspension as well.

300rwhp... around 370 crank hp. But its not that theres anything mechanically wrong with them, they are just severely underbuilt for cars making that kind of power. They were initially designed for small economy cars, like the chevette, but since the smaller rear end also helped boost fuel economy in the bigger cars too (less drag from the mechanical parts) they also put it in these cars, hoping it would outlast the warranty period. They were fine for the 150hp 305s they came with, but don't hold up well to a motor with any real mojo.

The rear ends are not bad for just driving around, and will take some abuse, but they don't handle really sticky tires or clutch dumping very well... same things that break T5s break these rear ends too, pretty much.

As far as what HP you'd be happy with... thats up to you. But in my experience, most people don't realise how fast a relatively light car like this is with a solid 350hp. Its more than most people really need or will ever use. Drive an LS1 4thgen and you'll see what I'm talking about.
