Axle and carrier question
I am rebuilding the 10 bolt I have in my car which is currently a 7.5 with 26 spline axles. I have a 7.625 powretrax unit that I want to install. My question is I know I need to find a 7.625 28 spline carrier but is any carrier with 28 spline a 7.625 ?

Re: Axle and carrier question
You need a 26-spline carrier if you have 26-spline axles ... unless you plan on changing our axles, too. I know that you can get posi carriers from S-10s (although they are Eaton GovLock's and not really meant for performance use) that hold 26-spline axles.
If you have the powertrax already, the obvious thing to do is to buy new axles.

[QUOTE=84 z28;3774215]Everything in the 10 bolt is setup for 26 spline. I want to upgrade to 28 spline unit. I have the 28 spline 7.625 powertrax unit all ready. I going to buy new 28 spline axles from strange or moser. I need to find a 7.625 carrier so my question is are all 28 pline carriers 7.625 or are some 7.5 also ?[/QUOT
7.5/7.625 is the dia of the ring gear and has nothing to do with the carrier. Just be sure you have the correct series carrier (2 or 3 series) with the matching gears and axle shafts.

Re: Axle and carrier question
7.625 and 7.5 does have to do with the carrier the powertrax units arent interchangable between the 2. So thats why I need to know if 7.5 and the 7.625 came in 28 spline before I just go and buy one off of ebay.
Re: Axle and carrier question
What is important to you is that it is a 10-bolt part and the carrier matches (2-3 series) the ratio of the gear set. Also the spline count of carrier is 26 or 28 whichever you need..

Re: Axle and carrier question
My best explanation is this:
7.5 and 7.625 are the OUTSIDE diameters of the ring gears. I'm pretty sure the INSIDE diameter (of the hole) is the same between the two ... that's why they are interchangeable. Either should work with your unit.
I'm not too familiar with Powertrax, but I am pretty sure this is right.
All you need to know is whether you need a series II or series III carrier for 28-spline axles. Series II is 3.08 and down, and Series III is 3.23 and up for the 10-bolt.

Re: Axle and carrier question
If there is no difference in the 2 carriers then why do then sell do different posi units for 7.5 and 7.625 and then they also sell 2 different 28 spline axles for 7.5 and 7.625.

Re: Axle and carrier question
Isn't the spline count of the carrier only determined by the side spider gears, which are removable?

Re: Axle and carrier question
84 z28 is totally right, there IS a difference in the carriers for the 7.5 and 7.625. the inside, where the spiders gears go is a slightly different size between the two, like an 1/8" different or so. the 7.5 rears were used up to 84 i believe and just about everything after that was the 7.625, so i would be a safe conclusion that any 28 spline carrier is a 7.625, since they were from 88 or so up.
The is definilty a difference, i have dealt with it first hand

Re: Axle and carrier question
If nothing changed except spline count then why does summit offer 28 spline axles in 7.5 and 7.625 like i listed.
Re: Axle and carrier question
All information on any parts are subject to errors and theirs is on the reference of 28 spline axle shafts. And the error is using the ring gear dia of 7.5/7.625 ref. It all goes back to the diff carrier that fits the axle shafts which was NOT changed except for the spline count in 1989.

Re: Axle and carrier question
DJP87Z28, the carriers were different in the early cars, there is a difference, i dont know why but i have seen/measured it myself. Ive even installed a powertrax for a 7.5 style carrier into a 7.625 style carrier and it was way to small and required shimming to bring it into spec. the ring gears interchange, no difference there.
If he has a power trax for a 7.625 rear, it will only fit in a carrier that was manufactured after 84.
There is no rearson so start a pissing match over this, but this is just the way it is.
