Speedometer Gear question

I have a cable driven speedo, which has been giving me hell over the past few weeks, leaking, sheared gearshaft (speedo cable won't turn). Can I convert my speedo gear to an electronic one? I know I need to change my speedometer itself, but can I buy like a conversion where there will be no cable anymore?

I want to do this because I can hardly find any speedometer gear housing parts, and I know if I change to electronic, I don't need a cable to replace, I won't have a sheared gearshaft anymore, and it will stop the leaking.

Please let me know what kind/brand is best, and where to buy one.

Thanks,
- Justin

IIRC, the electronic has a gear (which could shear) along with a sleeve and o-ring (which could leak). I don't see how swapping would be a benefit.

Here's food for thought:

Re: Speedometer Gear question

In the long run, my biggest problem is the cable. The first one was the original 89 two-piece cable that ripped in half, the another incident, my fault, I didn't tuck it up properly, and it melted against my headers etc...

So, would it be worth my effort, time and money to convert to electronic speedometer gear?

The stripped gearshaft was cause because of the cable metling and freezing up. With the electronic, there is no cable to melt and get stuck. And as for leaking, well, that just comes with anything that deal with fluids. I, personally think it is good to convert to electronic, but just wanting ideas.

Thanks!

Not for me personally, but then I haven't experienced your problems.

Re: Speedometer Gear question

I can't think of any cheap or easy way to convert to electric off the top of my head. Besides that, the electric unit still goes in the same hole in the tailshaft housing, so they're just as prone to leakage. Sounds like you just had some bad luck with the way you had the cable routed. All the parts you need to fix your mechanical setup properly are cheap and very easy to come by. I'd just suggest getting the new parts you need, and being more careful about how you route the new cable. I've seen lots of guys have problems with the electric ones too, so I really can't say it'd be a worthwhile improvement over what you've got now.
