Re: busted first 10-bolt

Spider gears are very common to break in them. Although you wouldn't know it by the people on here.
They think all the 10-bolts issues are soley because of the 7.5" ring gear.

Re: busted first 10-bolt

on the piece i pulled out i could see stress cracks in it and im sure that the added traction i got from the new tires didnt help it any. for street driving i went from dryrotted 235/60-15 hoosiers that would spin for 5+ft when i hit second to new 275/40-17 kuhmo escta supra tires aired down a lil they will just barely bark when i hit second. well im debating on what to do i know i want to upgrade to 4.11's but since the move im kinda lack of funds for now so i want to try and put it back together so i can run it until i get a better stronger rear built. ive never really messed with rear gears much but i have faith in myself lol if i cant do it ive got many friends that build trucks that are always replacing gears and broken parts. what all is involved with replacing spider gears and getting it ok to drive for awhile?

Re: busted first 10-bolt

Hey, if it's just your spider gears that are messed up, and the carrier itself is still ok, I can hook you up for cheap. I just threw away an open carrier that was no good, but I kept all 4 spider gears, thrust washers, and the center pin, since there was nothing wrong with them. New spider gear sets are kinda expensive. If you're interested, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Re: busted first 10-bolt

weired part is i pulled the cover and no posi ok but every time i took off hard or did a burnout it always spun both tires. maybe a sign that it was goin? i know on the spider gears it looks like they have been rubbing hard between the gears for awhile. oh ad it does have 3.42's so im asuming it has been into before. i looked on the option chart for all the year thirdgens and it doesnt show that a lg4 auto car would come with 3.42's stock.

Re: busted first 10-bolt

While it's probably not impossible that it got 3.42's stock, it's highly unlikely. I'm betting the original ratio was probably either 2.73 or maybe 3.08. If it was a L69 HO car, 3.23 or 3.42 would be more of a possibility. I pulled a set of factory 3.73's out of an 85 L69, 5 speed, Z/28 car at the junkyard a couple of years ago. It also had the crappy Eaton Gov-Loc posi carrier.

Re: busted first 10-bolt

yea on the charts it says that 2.73 or 3.08 came in the non l69 cars. i had a friend that had a 84 5spd l69 and it had 3.73 my 86 lg4 has 2.73

Re: busted first 10-bolt

Don't feel bad dude. My 89 TBI car was cursed with 2.73's too originally. I'd have to say changing the rear gears and adding a good 3" exhaust system have been the biggest/most noticeable improvements I've done so far. My next major project is going to be putting a 5 speed manual trans in. I keep putting that off since it's nice to be able to drink my big mug of coffee in the mornings without having to shift.

Re: busted first 10-bolt

lol well the 86 is sitting missing motor and tranny now awaiting ls1 t56 swap and a 4.11 rear. next few mods for the 82 will be a t56 and a stronger rear when money comes along. having only three formard gears gets annoying since the car is very loud

Is yours a WC T-5 ? Heard they were pretty good and could handle 450 hp.
