Quick tranny question
The tranny in my car is on it's last legs, and I am thinking about ordering a remanufactured tranny from GM instead of having mine rebuilt. In case you're wondering why, it's because the GM one comes with a 3 year/50k mi warranty, and I'm a poor college student and can't afford to have pay for another rebuild if the first one sucks.
Anyway, I'm going to order one for a 91 Corvette, so it will shift a little harder than the stocker. Basically I just want to double-check that this tranmission will bolt in to my car with no problems.
TIA,
Scott

Come on, this is an easy question. I'm 99% sure that it will work myself, I just want someone to verify that.

Does a Corvette use a torque arm on their tailshaft? Could the 'Vette one not have the bolts for a torque arm? That's the only "problem" I could see... other than that, like you said, a 700r4 is a 700r4..
If you have the cash for that Gm one then yeah do it.. my trans has been rebuilt TWICE and it still sucks.
Next time it goes, I'll rebuild it myself. At least I couldn't do worse!

Hmmm, I hadn't thought about that. I'm pretty sure that my friends 96 Vette has one on it's 4L60E though, so I would think this one would. Can anyone else answer this for sure?
Also, the tranny is only $1,049 from www.gmpartsdirect.com , plus $140 shipping and a $250 core charge. However I just got an e-mail back from them saying that my current tranny would not qualify for the core charge. Do you think I could get at least $250 from a boneyard or individual for a 700r4 needing a rebuild?

Why don't you just get the tranny for your car? It comes with all the latest updates, and it isn't hard to install a Vette Servo. Have fun trying to find a '91 Vette core. When you send the core in, they will know the year and model that the tranny came out of, so you can't fool them. It will have to have a "1YHD" or something similar in the serial number or on the sticker on the bellhousing. That is how they know.
Even if the Vette tranny doesn't have the Torque Arm mounting boss, the tailhousings are interchangable and you can just swap yours over.

GMTech, are the servos the only difference between the two trannys? If so I might be better off going that route. Thanks for clearing up the torque arm issue.

If you're getting a tranny from GM, they probably want the old one as a core.
If it isn't a vette tranny, you might get some grief from the parts guy.. In like, "I'm not paying you for the core".
If you're getting a tranny, you might as well just replace the servo when it arrives... Or have the tranny shop do it.. Vette servos are cheap.. 25.00 or so...

Many of the Corvette 700R4's do not come with transmission mount holes, since there mounting is on the side. Beware! The Corvette is about 1" shorter in length. Anymore questions?
Hope This Helps!!!

PBA, unfortunately I just ordered the transmission last night. If it comes like you are saying would I be able to remedy the problem by simply swapping over the tailshaft housing? Or do you think I should cancel the order - thanks.

Nevermind, I cancelled the Vette tranny and I'm just going to order a 700r4 for my car and add the servo and stuff myself. It's probably a little safer that way.
Scott and Tom
My flexplate tore up and tranny cracked (pics enclosed)due to broken tranny mount...I was on it hard. So I had to take out the tranny and put in a core that my buddy AJ gave me for $250. 1. it needed a front seal ($350) paid for cables ($150) and now it is fu#ked. Autozone has a reman for my GTA at $750 with TC all new parts. My plan, instead of taking it back multiple times, just gonna get it (the reman) put a servo, then call it quits...best deal for budget..just some input.

Here's how I found the bellhousing crack
I was targeting the noise from the TC, turned out to be the flexplate, tranny was working fine but couldn't get a core since the housing was cracked to sh#t and the problem was the flexplate.

I'm lucky the son of a gun didn't bust up on me, after I took the bolts off this flywheel, I used a large screwdriver to pull apart the "entire" disk,'
