T5 gearing questions?

Is the t5 out of tpi car the same gearing as one from a tbi car?

I heard most GM cars came with a .62 overdrive and some came with .73. I was thinking of installing 3.70 gears and i was wondering is it posible to change my overdrive gearing from .73 to .62 ?

not that this answers your question, but I've had both. My (i assume!) stock (not WC t5) tranny had the .73, and my new (rebuilt) WC t5 has .62. (i'm tpi, btw)

The mech said the stock was from an 89 (my car's 91... I don't know what's up with this unless someone had it replaced at some point)..

Honestly, I'd rather have the .73.. With my 3.08 gears, I can take 4th up to ~125 or so... but that's not enough to get everyone! Once I shift into fifth now at .62, I've lost.

Still, with crazyass monster torque, I don't often need to shift out of fifth to pass people... And it should be good for better gas mileage...

Just my thoughts

I believe the 3.08 geared cars (which is all TBI's and some TPI's) got the 2.95 first geared and .63 5th geared T5, and the 3.42 geared cars (which is all TPI's) got the 2.75 first gear and .73 5th gear. I do not know how the T5 gears are in the carb'd and/or the V6 cars.

The 1LE and B4C cars got the .70 5th gear and a 3.23 gear for the rear end.
All others was suppost to get the .63 5th gear.
All T-5's after 87 where World class trannies.
You should be able to change the gears with GM parts.

If you have a V8 trans with the .73 OD ratio, and want the .62 ratio, find a V6 unit and swap over the two OD gears onto the V8 tranny...next time I pull mine out, I'm definitely swapping them in the interest of better gas mileage. With my 3.42 gears, they will lower a 2000 cruise rpm down to about 1650rpm.
