Pinion bearing preload

what would it hurt to run 35 inch pounds of preload? (new bearings)

I would use about half of that. But if you must use that much preload, break the bearings in easy--don't get them hot. The bearings will "wear in" and you should be fine. Also, change the fluid after the break in period because of the fine metallic particles produced as the bearing "wear in".
