.... bypass the cooler in the radiator and just use an external cooler? I was thinking of getting a manual type aluminum radiator and use just the external cooler but my tranny is modified so I don't know if it will be safe.

 

i don't see why you couldn't. i put an external cooler on a 88 camaro and i have a permacool with fan on my 85.

Thanks, I called a hi-performance tranny shop and they said I should bypass the cooler in the radiator. They suggested getting 1 with a fan such as PremaCool because of the limited airflow through the grill on camaros. I was just cautious because my trans is modified.
