6-speed to a 396

Does anybody know what I would need or if it is even possible to bolt a new style 6 speed out of a camaro up to an old 70's 396 engine?

Yes. It should able to bolt up to a 396. I wouldn't worry about ripping it apart unless it's a heavily modded 396 and even then. One thing you'll need is a special made flywheel for your engine. That should be about it, I can't for the life of me remember the place that sells those flywheels. Hopefully someone will respond that knows.

Hey 87bigblock, all you need is a T-56 flywheel from CENTERFORCE that is for your particular bigblock application. Whether it be internally or externally balanced. I installed a 96 T-56 in an 87 ASTRO-VAN with a 2-piece RMS 350 and DFI. The flywheel was around $300, call CENTERFORCE and find out exactly which one is for your engine. WARNING, DO NOT get a CENTERFORCE CLUTCH, they are expensive and they have engagement problems with T-56's. Many of my 4th GEN. buddies have pettitions about this on the LT-1 site, but CENTERFORCE won't acknowlege the fact. Other than that, their FLYWHEELS are good. You could just get a LT-4 PP and T/O Bearing (which is what CENTERFORCE and SLP uses), then buy a CARBON FIBER/KEVLAR, or KEVLAR/KEVLAR LT-1 disc from www.clutchnet.com for $175-$200. I have the CARBON FIBER/KEVLAR disc with a new LT-1 PP and T/O bearing and it works wonders, NO SLIP WHAT SO EVER. For your application, you would probably benifit from the ALL KEVLAR disc, since you have alot more TORQUE. These clutches are VERY GRABBY, and the ALL KEVLAR piece is especially so. HTH's and good luck. BTW, you can get the LT-4 PP from a local GM DEALER for like $250. I can't remember the part number, but it does have a higher clamping force than the LT-1 PP. I will post the part number later .
