Full Bore gutless!!!

Ok, here is my deal. I have a 1988 GTA with teh 350, 700R4. If I take off at half throttle by car is in first than it shifts to second after like half a second of being in first. And once it is in second, it won't go back into first unless I come to a complete stop. Like if i want to take off like a bat out of hell with out spinning my tires it is impossible. Because the only way to wind through first is to floor it and whne I do that I spin all over the place. So if my car is in second and i ma doing like 10 mph and i floor it it stays in second, shoudln't it shift into first. I hate this.
ANy one know why my car does it and what I can do to stop it.
Jason

Sounds like you need to adjust the tranny detent cable at the throttle body. I forget the specific instructions, but I'm sure they've been posted on this board recently and are probably in the thirdgen.org archives or a tech article. I think most shop manuals have the procedure too...

You gotta pull backon the TV cable a little. with car off, push the detent button on the cable and at the same time, pull back on the SHEATH (not the working part of the cable) until you 'feel' it notch back once. Then test drive. Only pull back one nothch at a time as the trans is rather sensitive to cbale changes.

My trans guy says that it is adjusted pretty much right when you are driving along slowly in first, trans shifts into second and when you then nail it, the trans should downshift into first. If not, pull back on sheath, as I described.

Let me know what happens. This will probbaly slightly raise your shift points and firmness, by the way.

the proper way to adjust the TV cable is to push the button in, pull the sheath back really far and then open the throttle all the way by hand and the sheath will be pulled forward to its proper position.

Right, Vortec, but FastBroker's talking about making a minor adjustment. I think you can get one or two clicks back from the "proper" adjustment.

Problem is, adjust it too far, and the cable will snap back to the "proper" adjustment the next time you floor the gas.

Yeah, you can only make it shift so hard and so late as the cable will ratchet back to the "proper" setting with a WOT push of the pedal. In a properly built (even stock) trans w/a shift kit, normal adjustment is ok. I have found that 2 notches of the sheath forward is best for 350's and the "proper" setup for 305's. Mainly cause the 350s can handle the shift a little earlier.
