Am I wrecking my transmission?

Ok, whenever I come to a stop where I know that I will sit there for a while, I always put my transmission into neutral. I do this because it seams like it puts less stress on the engine. But when I go again and put it back into drive, the car always jerks foward. not a lot, but noticable. I was wondering if always putting my tranny into neutral and then back into drive all the time is wrecking something?

my camaro .....and my Plymouth roadrunner do it....dont worry about it....if you want to bring the "punch" down abit......lower your idle ...it might help......but....nothing too serious....normal wear ....

Any other opinions? I'm just wondering if always going in and out of drive will wreck anything.

The guys over at car talk commented on doing this - They dont recommend it. Even though it does take some load off the engine, every time you put your car in gear you are jolting everything in your drive train.

I would just leave it in drive, thats probably what the car was designed for.

Check your tranny mount for the cause of that jerk. My car jolted badly into gear when I first bought it and the guy said its always done it, it turned out to be the tranny mount!
