Will my tranny and rear hold it all???
Will my tranny and rear hold it all???
My 86 Iroc is at my mechanic's right now getting the 305 pulled out and having a 350 put in that'll have approximately 300 hp when I get it back. I was wondering if the tranny will hold up to that kinda power. I think that the tranny may be screwed. It shifts very firmly, though rather erratically, for the first 15 or 20 minutes of driving. Then the tranny just goes totally wimpy on me. It starts shifting like my parents crown vic. I was going to have the tranny rebuilt, but it looks pretty expensive. And my rear seems fine, it's got the drum brakes. I was just basically wondering what kind of power these will take without modification. Thanks.

i am pretty sure that 350 wont break anything, mine hasnt yet. you might as well have that tranny rebuilt and have some good stuff put in while your at it. do it now or later but later you might be on the freeway and have the pump burn up and you'll be stuck on the road, either way it cost alot of money.just my 2 cents

you should be fine, it normally takes about 400 ft/lbs to screw up the trans, but since it's acting up, check the TV cable and if that doesn't do it, you're looking at a rebuild.
