Rear End swap

i found a rear end out of an 85' monte carlo ss thats posi with 3.73 gears. Will it fit in my 86 Z?

don't think the monte has a provision for the torque arm. if you're talking just the carrier it'll fit.

Axle/Gears: Ford 9"/31 spline spool/4.86
The housing won't fit at all. The rear suspension is completely different. The gears might. Most g-bodies had 7.5 gears but some are 8.5. If it's a 7.5 diff than you can swap the gears and carrier over into the f-body diff.

it is a 7.5" so i should be able to swap parts on them right?

If your 86 Z has 3.08 gears or lower then the 3.73 gears will probably not fit unless they are aftermarket gears made for the 3.08 and 2.73 gear carriers. Richmond makes these gears for the 3.08 housings that are lower than a 3.08 (lower meaning 3.42, 3.73, ect). Stock GM 3.73 gears will only fit in a housing that came with 3.23 or lower gears.

is there a code somewhere that will tell me what gear is in there now? i think they are 2.73 gears but im not positive.
