Sure... find a Firebird or Camaro in a junkyard with a posi axle, buy it, and swap it on.

A minor problem- your '83 has non-metric (SAE) brake lines & fittings. All the 84-up cars use metric. If you switch the axle, you're going to have to put your rear drum brakes on the junkyard axle. That way, two things happen:

1. You retain your SAE brake fittings, and don't need to play with getting the right adaptors

2. You know your rear brakes are working pretty well, as opposed to the unknown ones from the junkyard.

Drum brakes will just unbolt from the axle.. in fact you could probably unbolt the whole system (hoses/lines/etc) without cracking a fitting open. However, it'd be very smart to replace the rear body-to-axle brake hose.. after 17 years, it's probably near failure.

A Haynes 82-92 Camaro manual will have all the info you need for axle removal/installation, brake rebuilding/removal/installation, and axle maintainance. I'd also suggest a few more things:

1. Replacing rear axleshaft bearings (also misnamed "wheel bearings") and seals. Cost = $30

2. Painting the axle to look pretty with POR-15, which stops rust. You paint over the rust with the stuff, and it causes a chemical reaction. I used it, and bought a Super Starter Kit for $20 that was enough to cover my axle. Visit http://www.por-15.com

You can find brake & axle parts from places like http://www.carparts.com , http://www.wrenchhead.com , and http://www.expressautoparts.com . In fact, if you go to http://www.yahoo.com and search for "Carparts.com coupon", you can find some awesome online coupons to save big bux.

If you swap to rear disc brakes, you'll have much more of a headache... trust me, I did it.
