4:11 gears in an 85
me and my dad got a good deal on a 79 camaro with a 350 th400 tranny and a rear end with 4:11 gears. will the rear end fit in my 85 or do i need something else. will i also need to shorten or lengthen my stock drive shaft.

won't fit. the 2nd gens used a differant rear than the thirdgens, plus you have the torque arm to deal with.

Car: 87 IROC L98
Engine: 588 Alcohol BBC
Transmission: Powerglide
Axle/Gears: Ford 9"/31 spline spool/4.86
The gears themselves won't work in the third gen. Wrong size
The diff will fit, size wise, but that's all. The 79 uses leaf springs. 82-00 use coils and a torque arm. You would need to move all the mounting hardware from the third gen diff over to the 79. Then you need to find some way of mounting the torque arm. It's the torque arm mounting that makes diff swapping into a third gen almost impossible. Aftermarket 12 bolts have a mounting pad cast into the housing and ford 9" diffs have an available mounting bracket that just bolts on.
