Ok, I am starting to think that I have a blown tranny. Now I was wondering what route you think would be cheaper, or less labor intensive. Should I buy a nice used 700R4 to replace the one I have now, Or should I go with a 5 speed and do a swap. Also will a 700r4 out of a 84 trans am work for my car, an 88 GTA 350
And is there differeint 700r4's that woudn't be compatible wiht my car. I do not know much about trani's

700r4's have had so many mods over the years that i wouldn't swap an older one in...i wouldn't buy a used one unless you see some sort of work reciepts on it to prove it's been gone through. I've paid as little as $500 and as much as $750 to get a rebuild done. I finally learned to do them myself and it cost me $200 and that was with a new front pump at $140 alone....so if you're abitious and don't need the car right away buy a book and go to town, otherwise find a GOOD shop and don't be afraid to pay a little extra...lot's of shops i've been to will beef up 3rd gear with more clutchs than stock and do performance mods and still warantee it if they do it.
Be honest with them and tell them if you're going to beat on it or not.

As for the t-5 swap, i have an 87 305 with a t-5 now, i had and 88 305/700r4 (modified) before and was much happier......food for thought
