Advise needed for tranny rebuild on 87 IROC

Basically, I have the same problem as JEFJM and it won't shift into 3rd.

We noticed that the TV cable needed replaced and we did that yesterday and took it out for a spin tonight. We plan on checking the governor tomorrow, but we aren't to hopeful on that. The fluid looked bad.

Anyway, we would like to rebuild the tranny ourself. We haven't done that before. Please let me know if there are things we need to consider before taking this on and also if there are special tools we need to get.

Thanks!!

hey stella, don't see you over here very often. yeah you need special tools, and some regular tools lot of people don't have. if you do the trans r&r there is only a few hours labor in the rebuild, not sure exactily what the flat rate is ,but it's way less if you just pay for the parts and rebuild labor. take a look in a manual at what's all involved before you jump into a 700 rebuild, they're little harder to do than the th350&400 trans.

Hey Ede.

He has the regular tools I am sure, since he is a mechanic for his day job. He works only on engines though.

It is something that we always wanted to learn for ourselves to do and since we don't need the car as a daily driver we don't mind it taking a bit to accomplish.

What are the special tools and regular tools?

first go get the Haynes book...they have one that covers all of the chevy auto's; it's step by step with pictures....read though it to see if it's something you can tackle before you tear it apart.

if you still want to do it the only real "specialty tool" you will need is a spring copressor which you can easily make....or borrow if your buddy is in the mechanic biz.

i recomend www.transtarindustries.com for parts...I'm NOT affiliated with them at all but they are cheap, fast, and very patient and helpful on your first rebuild. you can get a complete rebuild kit and torque converter for probably under $200

good luck

Well...we found a rebuild kit for 130.00. But, I think we are going to have to try those people above. That sounds like an awsome deal. Thanks!

We decided to do it. We found out about a video that puts you through it step by step. Plus I will be checking out the other link about. We are gonna bring the tranny in the house and put it in the guest bathtub and get to work. That seems to be the easiest way, since the VCR is right around the corner.

Please keep any advice coming!
