Ok, I've heard that 9 bolt disc brake setups will bolt to the 10 bolt drum rears easily. Is this correct?? If not, what will it take to change from drums to discs? I trashed my 2.77 rear, and of course, it's a pain to find a new rearend. 9 bolts of the 3-series variety are hard to come by, and 3-series 10 bolts with posi and discs are hard to get ahold of around here too....plus the fact, if I do find one, the bastards want no less than $400 for them.

From what I know, no you cannot take the discs off a disc brake rear and stick them on a drum brake rear. You need to swap the whole rear end.

Yeah, I've heard this too. But what exactly stops one from doin this? In other words....WHY can't I put discs on a drum rear?

the flanges on the ends of the rear end housing are different for drums and discs. They could be cut off and welded, but its easier and probably cheaper to buy the proper rear.

 

Oh god....you're not talking about those little flanges that hold on the backing plate with four bolts are you? (That's what it does on my 9 bolt anyway). Those little 2"x2" bastards on either side? If that's the only difference, maybe I should just start buying the hell outta these POSI drum rears and swappin them out.....good god that's easy. I took those off when I did my 1LE brake upgrade. Somebody verify this please, I'm gettin too excited here.
